The Amwell Society contributed to the recent consultations from Islington Council (Basement Developments, Urban Design Guidelines, Basements), and from the Department for Transport (Crossrail 2). TfL is consulting on new proposals to improve the 5-way junction where Calthorpe St, Margery St, Lloyd Baker St, Farringdon Rd and Kings Cross Rd meet. At first sight the improvements seem to be aimed at cyclists with few benefits, if any, for pedestrians. The consultation runs until 6th April 2015. Following widespread consultation, Islington Council has produced a Planning Brief for Clerkenwell Fire Station which can be seen here.
The Amwell Society wrote in support of key elements of the Planning Brief at the consultation stage. At our instigation, the Fire Station was listed as an Asset of Community Value. The Fire Station is now up for sale. We should find out shortly whether any community groups have put together a credible bid for the building.

The original Islington Council planning briefs for the site of the New River Head were created in 1991 and 1999 on the two occasions when the site was developed into a mainly residential area. These are now considered to be potentially out of date as there have been changes in national and local policy. Also, following the recent appeals against the council’s decision to refuse planning permission for further residential development on what is the most historically interesting part of the site, the pump house and the windmill base, the Council believe it is necessary to reaffirm the original brief if it is still to hold good, and are asking the community what they think in 2013.
The draft planning brief can be found on the Islington Council website www.islington.gov.uk/newriverhead and there are two drop-in information sessions at the Old Finsbury Town Hall On Thursday 27th June 6.00am – 8.00pm and Saturday 29th June 11.00am – 2.00pm.
The draft planning brief restates the original aspiration to recognise the pump house and the windmill base and the coal stores as a heritage asset and to use them for offices, meeting spaces and an educational facility such as a museum without harming the buildings historic value. The brief then links these plans with the Council’s current policies.

The event is all about our community of residents, shops and businesses – we need everyone in that community to be part of making it a BIG success!
The street party is a great way to invest in the profile and community spirit of Amwell Street and the surrounding area. Please do all you can to help us make it the best day it can be – the more people that help the better it will be!
The theme is ‘Traditional Village Fete’ which will involve:
live music, street food sellers, fete games, afternoon tea, the dog show, craft workshops, vintage make-up masterclasses, bric-a-brac and a vintage clothes stall, an egg and spoon race, a three legged race, tug of war, a raffle and lots more!
What can you do?
1. Run a stall:
• Run a fete game/stall such as: splat the rat, play your cards right, guess the weight/guess the number of (sweets) in a jar, egg and spoon race, three legged race, hoop games, tombola etc. etc.
• Sell something – get in touch and give an idea of what you would like sell – all stalls must be original/not offer direct competition to another stall/shop on the street
• All stall holders are welcome to pocket a profit on their stalls however will be asked to pay a small rental fee
2. Can you suggest any good local Street Food sellers that would be interested in running a street food stall on the day?
3. Volunteer to help set up and tidy up on the day – this is a really important part of making the day a success – any help you can offer would be hugely appreciated
4. Give a raffle prize
5. Suggest any amateur performance acts that may like to perform on the day (dancers, singers, bands)?
6. Distribute flyers, posters and forward promotional emails, tweet about the event, like the event on Facebook… or do anything you can think of to let everyone know about the party – tell all your friends!
All money raised on the day will go towards funding the party and any money left over will be put in a fund for future events on the street.
